There’s always so much to do and accomplish in life, and so little time to do it all. It’s a constant battle and dilemma figuring out what to do and when, so as to lead productive and efficient lives.
Separate Negotiables from Non-negotiables
Segregate tasks based on priority. While all tasks are important, they can still be categorized under non-negotiable and negotiable. Highlight tasks that cannot do without your personal attention.
Focus on Completing One Task at a Time
Multitasking may appear as maximum utilization of time, however, in reality it reduces efficiency. Focus on completing one task at a time to increase overall productivity.
Tackle Important Tasks First
Out of ten tasks that need to be completed, pick out the most important task of the day and finish it first. This will motivate you to push through the day.
Identify the ‘What’ and ‘When’
We’re all wired differently and that’s okay. Some of us are morning people, while some of us are most productive towards the end of the day. Figure out what works for you according to your personality.
Our Own Minds: Enemy or Ally
Often our own thoughts are our enemies. We let negative thoughts demotivate us. Guard your mind and make sure you fill your mind with positive thoughts.
Identify Distractions
What distracts us varies from one person to another. For some its technology and social media, while to others its phone calls, etc. Identify what distracts you and work on avoiding them.
Avoid Long Conversations
Conversations can be easily time-consuming. Politely and tactfully avoid getting into long dialogues over the phone or in-person, especially when deadlines are to be met.
"Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most." - Abraham Lincoln
Know when to Say ‘No'
The ability to discern, say 'yes' to the right things and 'no' to the not so important things takes time and practice. Sadly, we can't take up everything that comes our way. We need to choose wisely.
Learn to ‘Let Go’
It’s difficult to let go because at some level we’re all control freaks. However, because we can’t do it all, it’s important to let go of the avoidable, so the most efficient version of you can take off.
Answer Emails in the Afternoon
Post lunch is the time we’re running low and slow on our energy levels. Use this time of the day for meetings, answering emails, texts, phone calls, etc.
Avoid Known Stress-causing Factors
When on a deadline avoid people whose comments and opinions stress you out. Spend time with people who have a positive impact on your morale.
Don’t Get Discouraged
Increasing your productivity and efficiency will take time. It’s not something that happens overnight. So be patient with yourself.
