How to Become More Independent

Priya Johnson
We are born depending on our parents, siblings, teachers, friends, etc. However, that dependency has to wean off into adulthood. Let's find out what can we do to ensure we become more independent.
Wean Yourself
It's time to cut the umbilical cord and stop depending on your parents for telling you what to do. It's time to make your own decisions.
Respect Yourself
You are worthy of respect and are fully capable of making your own choices. You have the intelligence and ability to know what's good for you.

Speak Up
Don't be afraid to share your views and opinions. Feel free to express even if it means you disagree. Your voice is equally important.
Do Things For Yourself
Start by doing chores and taking care of yourself. Don't look down upon daily chores.

Don't Be Hard on Yourself
Not every decision you make is going to work as you planned. But, that's okay! Allow yourself to learn from mistakes.
"I am no bird; and no net ensnares me: I am a free human being with an independent will." - Charlotte Bronte
Be Proud of Your Skills
You are unique and gifted with multiple talents. Talents come in all shapes and sizes. Applaud your strengths.
Own Your Actions
How we love to blame others for things that didn't work out. Taking ownership for our own mistakes is a vital step.

The Time is Now
Don't wait to get that promotion or get into a relationship, etc. to finally step into the independence mode.
Stop Making Excuses
Don't procrastinate. Excuses are just ways to justify your fear to take ownership of your life. You're now an adult. Step up for yourself!
Let Go of the Past
No one has control over the future. Don't get bogged down by the 'what if I did that', etc.  Focus on the present and what you can do to change things.
Dear Past,
Thanks for all the lessons.

Dear Future,
I'm Ready
Know Yourself
Spend time getting to know yourself. Introspect and find out what you feel, like, dislike, etc. This will help you make decisions for yourself.
Pay Heed to Advice
Independence doesn't mean ignoring the wisdom of those around you. Listen to what loved ones have to offer, but make sure the final decision is yours.
Respectfully Decline
We don't need to be people pleasers nor do we need to be rude. Respectfully say you have other plans or views. We can agree to disagree. That's maturity!
