How to Clear Your Mind

Deepa Kartha
The human mind is home to millions of thoughts, some conscious and some unconscious. While our thoughts are what make us alive and unique, too many stressful thoughts can run havoc in our life. Having a clear mind is necessary to live a peaceful life.

Importance of a Clear Mind

It is the nature of the human mind to go through the same loop when undergoing a stressful situation. Thinking too much about the same problem can never solve the problem, instead it can cause hurdles in your daily life and even affect your sleep. Hence, clearing your mind is extremely important to reduce stress.

Tips for Clearing Your Mind

The human mind has the tendency to be drawn to negative or worrying thoughts. Staying away from thoughts that are troubling you is extremely difficult. But it is not impossible. With certain methods, it is possible to put a cap to your thoughts.
While some of these methods should be practiced on a daily basis to remain stress free, few of them can be used for instant relief from stressful thoughts.

Talk to Someone

There is nothing more cathartic than talking about your thoughts to a loved one. Everyone should have a trusted person in their lives, be it a friend, parent, sibling or partner, who can listen to your woes without judgement.
Even if the person cannot give you any advice, just talking about what is worrying you would lighten your heart and lift your spirits. Sometimes, you would even be able to find a solution to your problem.

Write it Down

If talking to someone is not something you are comfortable with, write it down. Research has proved that putting your thoughts and feelings on paper can help lighten the mind.
While journaling on a daily basis is more effective, writing down something when you are bogged down by your thoughts also helps.

Do Mundane Chores

When you are too stressful due to one thought running over your mind all the time, choose to do the routine tasks that otherwise you want to postpone. So, wash your dishes, declutter your wardrobe, clean your kitchen or may be fold the washed laundry.
However, whatever you do, do it with mindfulness. Focus on what you are doing. When your mind wanders off to the same thoughts, bring it back to the task on hand.

Get Out of the House

Sometimes staying within the four walls of your home will not allow you to stop thinking about your problem. In this case, it would be best to get out and do something to distract yourself. Walking in the nature, watching a movie or meeting friends would help you to clear your mind at least for a few hours.

Exercise

There is nothing better than physical exertion to calm your mind. When you indulge in high intensity exercises, you not only have to engage your body but also need your mind to focus on the workout. Strength training, pumping out in the gym or even jogging or running in the park would get you to quicken your heartbeat and quieten your mind.

Meditate

It is a well known fact that the permanent way of calming your mind is meditation. However, meditation is not easy, especially when stressful thoughts are running in your mind. Hence, this is something that one has to practice regularly.

Choose a time and place where you would not be disturbed. Close your eyes and focus on your breathing. Whenever thoughts come to your mind, gently bring your focus back to your breathing. You would have to do this numerous times to finally clear your mind completely.
